Red Bull Officially Appeal Ricciardo’s Disqualification
Red Bull have appealed against Ricciardo’s disqualification from the Australian Race last Sunday..
Ricciardo was disqualified as his car was using more fuel than allowed throughout the race distance whilst his team refused to reduce the fuel flow when informed by the FIA during the race that they were over the limit. Red Bull could have ‘turned down’ the engine and comply with the regulations however they chose not to act to preserve the second place they have now lost.
The team says that it chose not to make the adjustment because “inconsistencies with the FIA fuel-flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane”.
An FIA clarification at the start of the weekend stated that their would be no tolerance to teams not complying with the new fuel flow regulations.
It is the first year of a new engine in Formula 1, which has seen the introduction of 1.6-litre V6 turbo power units with a limited fuel allowance. Engines must have a fuel-flow rate of no more than 100kg/h. This is measured by a sensor provided by an FIA approved supplier.
Irregularities and all readings are analysed by the FIA live (during the race) the teams are given a correction to apply if necessary.
